February 19th talk by Dr. Peter Connell on
‘The Great Famine in County Meath – winner and losers’
On the eve of the Great Famine, Meath was of the richest agricultural counties. And yet, there was ‘starvation in the midst of plenty’ as 15,000 died from famine-related conditions between 1845-51. These were the obvious ‘losers’. As it swept away thousands of cottiers and labourers, the Famine created conditions that favoured large-scale livestock farming.  Peter’s talk explored these themes using maps, landed estate and Poor Law records.
